Founded in 1987 by musicians of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group is a British chamber ensemble specialising in performances in new and contemporary music.
The Birmingham Contemporary Music Group has received many awards over the years, including, in 1993, the Royal Philharmonic Society Chamber Ensemble Award and the Prudential Award for Music, the Gramophone Award for Best Orchestral Recording in 1995, the Performing Right Society Millennial Award in 1999, the West Midlands Arts Ball 2002 Outstanding Achievement Award and the Royal Philharmonic Society Audience Development Award three years later. In 2008 the group was also a recipient of the MIDEM International Recording Award.
Committed to the presentation of new work, the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group supports young people as composers and performers thanks to its extensive Learning and Participation Programme, works with deaf and hearing impaired young people and offers a wide range of in- and out-of-school projects. It has been recognised as a National Portfolio Organisation by the Arts Council England. The ensemble performs regularly at the Symphony Hall and the CBSO Centre in Birmingham and has appeared several times at the BBC Proms.
The Birmingham Contemporary Music Group is responsible for many ambitious commissions and has gained a reputation for its original performances and innovative audience-building. A world-leading contemporary ensemble touring nationally and worldwide, the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group has premiered over 160 works, most of which commissioned through its innovative Sound Investment scheme, with each new piece supported by a family of investors.
