Canterbury Cathedral Choir is one of the great choral foundations of the Church of England, maintained by the Dean & Chapter of the Cathedral.
The Choir provides a core musical treasure to the cathedral life. A group of 16 to 18 choristers called "The Sixteen" with the Lay Clerks of the Cathedral, the gentlemen choristers, provide a daily service "Evensong" for most of the year in the quire of the Cathedral and a larger number of services on Sundays and Feast Days. The repertoire the choir sings ranges from the earliest plainchant, dating from the foundation of the Cathedral, to XXIst century compositions, but including the full panoply of sacred music from many centuries of tradition in the church in England and also providing choral music of many other traditions as well. The Organist, David Flood, has the function of director of the choristers and supervises the music in the Cathedral.
The Lay Clerks of the Cathedral Choir are professional singers who sing throughout the year with the choristers and services for men’s voices. They all have busy careers outside the precincts of the cathedral but a focus for their daily lives is the music which accompanies the worship and life of the community at Canterbury.
When their duties at the cathedral allow, they also give concerts and make recordings and on tour from time to time. They also perform at the great ceremonial occasions in the Cathedral which is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
