Time and again this wonderful recording of Meistersinger tops the polls. Lovingly conducted by Rudolf Kempe and with a cast that could never be assembled today in the opera house (who could now afford to cast someone of the calibre of Hermann Prey as The Nightwatchman?), this is a performance to die for!

Recorded at the end of the mono era, Kempe’s conducting reveals much detail that has eluded later conductors and the starry cast are at one with his reading. At the time of its release, reviewers were lost for words; one writer called it ‘monumental and druggingly beautiful’. As a bonus Magdalen include selections from a 1950s highlights LP issued by DGG with Wolfgang Windgassen (in stunning voice), Annelies Kupper and Josef Herrmann.
