This CD presents a unique opportunity to indulge in some high-quality fun music not widely known in this country. Known affectionately as ‘EK1 and 2’ Künneke father and daughter went their separate ways once Evelyn began to promote her own career. Her father Eduard (1885-1953) was the successful composer of 1920’s and 30’s operettas (particularly Glückliche Reise heard on this CD) that made generous use of dance forms - think of Gershwin’s Oh Kay and Strike Up The Band - as well as the gloriously over the top Dance Suite (subtitled Concerto Grosso for Jazzband and orchestra!). Evelyn, (1921-2001) whose singing style was not unlike Alice Faye, had the misfortune to rise to fame during the war but her criticisms of the system almost resulted in her death. She retained her popularity through the rock ‘n’ roll era, starred in Fassbinder films and in old age toured in cabaret with two others in an act called Three Old Bags!
