The Mugam of Azerbaijan is a tradition that has close ties with Persian and Arabic music and thus crosses ethnic boundaries. The Mugam in Azerbaijan means a framework of modes and tonal scales for music. These secular songs of love are taken from ancient poetic sources and are similar to Sufist music. The tradition is distinctive from the Azerbaijani western classical music as it has different musical training. Aygun Baylar sings and directs his group with kamache (vertical violin) and tar (stringed instrument) – the Baylar Folk Mugam Ensemble.
