The English pianist Martin Jones was born in 1940 in Witney. He is one of Britain’s most highly regarded solo pianists, in demand internationally for recitals and concerto performances. Martin Jones studied at London’s Royal Academy of Music and, in 1968, made his debut at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and in New York’s Carnegie Hall and received the Dame Myra Hess Award from the Musicians’ Benevolent Fund in the United Kingdom. From 1971 to 1988 Martin Jones held the post of pianist-in-residence at Cardiff University.
He is a prolific recording artist and his repertoire includes not only most of the standard works for piano but also a number of unusual works and premieres including the Ferruccio Busoni Concerto or works by Richard Rodney Bennett and Wendy Carlos. He was the first to perform Alun Hoddinott’s Third Concerto at the 1974 BBC Promenade Concerts and recorded his Second Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Andrew David.
Martin Jones has served as jury member on a number of American piano competitions. He has performed as concerto soloist with many of the leading British orchestras, as well as in Russia, Australia and the USA.
