Born in Canterbury, Kent, Simon Lepper read music at King’s College and studied piano accompaniment with Aaron Shorr and Michael Dussek in a postgraduate course at the Royal Academy of Music where he obtained a DipRAM and was awarded the Hodgson Fellowship. He furthered his training with Ruben Lifschitz in France, at the Fondation Royaumont. Whilst a student, Simon Lepper won all of the major awards for piano accompaniment, such as the Gerald Moore Award and the first prizes in the Royal Over-Seas League, the Richard Tauber and the Kathleen Ferrier competitions.
With violinist Carolin Widmann, Simon Lepper has recorded Phantasy of Spring, an album that won the German Critics Awards as well as a Diapason d’Or in 2009, and has given recitals in Amsterdam, Cologne, London, Madrid, Paris and Salzburg.
He has also accompanied many other instrumentalists including cellists Daniel Muller-Schott and Gemma Rosefield, clarinettists Julian Bliss and Jorg Widmann and violinists Renaud Capuçon, Chloe Hanslip, and Alexander Sitkovetsky.
As a chamber musician and a vocal accompanist, Simon Lepper has given performances throughout the UK and Europe, including recitals with Angelika Kirchschlager at La Monnaie in Brussels, a performance of Schubert’s Winterreise at the Schubertiade in Hohenhems, Austria, and many appearences at the Wigmore Hall with Sophie Bevan, Stephan Loges, Christopher Maltman, Christopher Purves, Elizabeth Watts and Lawrence Zazzo.
He has collaborated with many renowned singers such as Cora Burggraaf, Nicole Cabell, Allan Clayton, Ronan Collett, Lucy Crowe, Stéphane Degout, Gillian Keith, Gweneth-Ann Jeffers, Mark Padmore, Felicity Palmer, Joan Rodgers, Kate Royal, Bryn Terfel, Adrian Thompson and Roderick Williams.
Simon Lepper has recently made his US debut at Carnegie Hall, New York, with mezzo singer Karen Cargill.
His regular BBC Radio 3 broadcasts have included studio recordings with Karen Cargill, Robert Murray and Hyunah Yu, and recitals live from the Wigmore Hall with Andrew Kennedy, Sally Matthews, James Rutherford and Ailish Tynan.
Simon Lepper is an official accompanist for the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, and an adjudicator for the Kathleen Ferrier Prize, the Yamaha Birmingham Accompanist of the Year Award, the Royal Over-Seas League and the British music colleges competitions.
Moreover, Simon Lepper has become an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in 2005 and currently teaches chamber music and song accompaniment at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and piano accompaniment at the Royal College of Music in London, where he also co-ordinates the course.
