Grongar Hill is a celebrated extended poem by John Dyer, a hymn of praise to the landscape around Aberglasney in Carmarthenshire, an area well-known by Alun Hoddinott in his youth. He took four stanzas from the poem and set them for baritone and string quartet with piano and so begun the production of this remarkable album. It spans from the start of Hoddinott's professional compositional career and his Two Songs for bass voice and piano to his last vocal composition, The Blake Songs which is the centrepiece of this disc.
