Two orchestral works frame this disc: Cors de chasse was premiered, at the 2004 Brighton Festival, by the Philharmonia Orchestra with Håkan Hardenberger (trumpet) and Jonas Bylund (trombone).
Bylund is joined on this recording by Mark O’Keefe, the Irish trumpeter, under the baton of French new music specialist Pierre-André Valade.
Dogs and Wolves is a one-movement orchestral showpiece written especially for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra’s first season in their celebrated new home, City Halls, where it premiered in April 2006. Dogs and Wolves follows the helter-skelter course of the great poem of the same name by Gaelic Scotland’s leading poet, Sorley MacLean, in which he sees his unwritten poetic visions in the guise of a white deer, hunted over the mountains but always elusive. Driftwood on Sand, Hellawell’s second string quartet, is the CD’s most substantial piece, with its two main movements and four miniature preludes or "satellites".
A piano quartet and piano quintet complete the programme; both works were commissioned by the Schubert Ensemble. The Building of Curves was in part a response to Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao while Weaver of Grass is a single movement design that opens with some atmospheric sound combinations.
"Perhaps the most engaging British orchestral showpiece this decade [...] The performances are as expert as one might expect from musicians with whom Hellawell has collaborated extensively over the years, with Pierre-André Valade bringing real clarity to the dense textures of the orchestral pieces. [...] the composer’s own annotations offer numerous intriguing pointers to his composing. Those who are yet to make its acquaintance could certainly start here."
