Four days after Christmas on 29th December 1170, Archibishop Thomas Becket was murdered in his cathedral by the knights of Henry II. His feast day has been celebrated on that day for centuries with this Gregorian Chant.
"The singing projects, the selfless, reverent unity of voice and spirit required for this music, which was recorded in the cathedral’s Trinity Chapel, site of the original shrine of Thomas Becket"
(CD Review, USA)
"[...] a delightful idea. The music for this feast in the Salisbury rite is rich and memorable. In this case the selection from Matins includes five magnificent responsories and two antiphons [...] No one with an interest in western chant should hesitate to buy this."
(Gramophone)
