Born in 1963 in Cologne, Christiane Oelze studied with Klesie Kelly-Moog and furthered her education with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Erna Westenberger.
The soprano’s artistry has been acknowledged when she took part in the Hugo Wolf Competition in 1987 and when she won the first prize at the German Intercollegiate Competition for Song Duos the next year. Christiane Oelze was consequently invited to participate in international festivals, including Lake Constance and Berlin. She toured the USA, South America, Europe and Japan.
Since the early 1990s she has taken part in various opera productions, especially Mozart, as Pamina in The Magic Flute, Constanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Despina in Così fan tutte. She has performed at Covent Garden in London, Palais Garnier in Paris, the Hamburg State Opera, Glyndebourne, at the Salzburg Festival and Mozart Weeks, the Gluck Festival in Nuremberg, the Lucerne Festival and the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York.
Christiane Oelze has worked with many German orchestras, such as the Bamberg Symphony, the Düsseldorf Symphony, the Gürzenich Orchestra in Cologne, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the SWR and NDR Symphony Orchestras, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Berlin Philharmonic, and internationally with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brussels Philharmonic and L’Orchestre National de France. She has dedicated herself to late XIXth century works, particularly the works of Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss.
Her repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary, with Christiane Oelze is currently exploring the lieder and chamber music repertoires, accompanied by pianists Eric Schneider and Pierre-Laurent Aimard.
Christiane Oelze has worked with renowned conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Frans Brüggen, Riccardo Chailly, Colin Davis, Michael Gielen, Hartmut Haenchen, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Marek Janowski, Fabio Luisi, Neville Marriner, Roger Norrington, Simon Rattle, Horst Stein and Markus Stenz.
From 2003 to 2008 Christiane Oelze taught at the Robert Schumann School of Music and Media in Düsseldorf and she keeps teaching regular master classes at the Masterclass Apeldoorn, IRCAM, the Karlsruhe University of Music, the Vienna Master Courses and the Arosa Music Academy.
She has also been a jury member for various international music competitions.
